Vietnam 'threatens' to shut down Facebook over censorship row

Nov 19, 2020 22:55 IST

Vietnam has threatened to shut down Facebook in the country if it does not bow to govt pressure to censor more local political content on its platform, a Reuters report said quoting govt officials. Facebook complied with a government request in April to increase its censorship of “anti-state” posts for local users, but Vietnam asked the company again in August to step up its restrictions. Vietnam is a huge market for Facebook, where it earns revenue of nearly $1 billion. Facebook has faced mounting pressure from several governments, including India, over its content policies, but has so far avoided a ban in most places.
