Venice narrowly avoids being put on UNESCO's 'Danger List'

Jul 22, 2021 22:23 IST | By Editorji News Desk

Italian city of Venice has managed to save itself from being put on the list of world heritage sites that are considered to be in danger by UNESCO.

After being warned by the UN body that Venice, which was declared a world heritage site in 1987, needs more sustainable tourism management to avoid being put on the endangered list, Italy banned entry of large cruise ships into the city's fragile waterways a few days ago.

For years, campaigners have been calling for an end to cruise ships sailing past St Mark's Square. They say the giant floating hotels cause large waves that undermine the city's foundations and harm the fragile ecosystem of its lagoon.

UNESCO has given Italy time till December to submit a report on efforts taken to preserve the city's ecosystem and heritage.
