Rock icon Kurt Cobain's electric guitar, which he played in his band Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit” music video, was auctioned for nearly $5 million.
According to Variety, the Fender Mustang electric guitar was sold to the Jim Irsay Collection of Indianapolis at Julien’s Auctions on May 22.
The guitar was auctioned for approximately $4.5 million, surpassing its original estimate of $600,000.
In his final interview with Guitar World, Cobain had said that the 1969 left-handed guitar was one of his favourites.
“I’m left-handed, and it’s not very easy to find reasonably priced, high-quality left-handed guitars. But out of all the guitars in the whole world, the Fender Mustang is my favorite. I’ve only owned two of them," he said.
Apart from playing the guitar at various live concerts, the late singer-songwriter also used it for studio recording sessions of “Nevermind” and “In Utero".
The guitar was previously displayed at Seattle’s Experience Music Project, now known as MoPOP Museum of Pop Culture.
Cobain family will be donating a portion of the proceeds from the auction to Kicking The Stigma — the Irsays’ initiative to raise awareness about mental health disorders and remove the stigma associated with these illnesses.

In China’s Guangxi region, explorers have unearthed a forest hiding, prospering, and growing at the bottom of a sinkhole with trees ranging up to 130 meters tall.   The ancient forest that could throw light on some new species of flora and fauna has been found in a massive sinkhole in that extends up to 630 feet deep and spans more than 176 million cubic feet.  The Guangxi site is famous for sinkholes in Southern China and among the 30, it is the largest. The site reportedly had three caves in its walls and a well-preserved primitive forest at the bottom. Chen Lixin, who led the expedition team said he wouldn’t be surprised to know that there are species found in these caves that have never been reported or described by science until now.  The expedition used the single rope technique for caves to rappel along with the caves and discovered dense plants and trees as they descended vertically for 100 meters. The team reached the bottom of the pit which was characterised by tropical rainforest with the trees stretching upward desperately, growing tall and thin, showing a "slim" appearance.  According to a report in the Guangxi Daily newspaper, the sinkhole is dangerous, strange, steep, and beautiful.

Although the Guard gave only scant detail about the attack that occurred in broad daylight in the heart of Iran's capital, the group blamed the killing on “global arrogance,” typically code for the United States and Israel.
That accusation, as well as the style of the brazen killing, raised the possibility of a link with other motorbike slayings previously attributed to Israel in Iran, such as those targeting the country's nuclear scientists. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
The two assailants shot Col. Hassan Sayyad Khodaei five times in his unarmoured Iranian-made Kia Pride, state media said, right off a highly secure street home to Iran's parliament.
Reports identified Khodaei only as a “defender of the shrine,” a reference to Iranians who fight against the extremist Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq within the Guard's elite Quds force that oversees foreign operations.
Little information was publicly available about Khodaei, as Quds officers tend to be shadowy figures carrying out secretive military missions supporting Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group, and other militias in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere.
The Tehran prosecutor arrived at the crime scene within hours of the killing to investigate and demanded police urgently arrest the perpetrators. The probe's speed suggested Khodaei's prominence in the murky structure of the Guard's overseas operations.
Those operations have come under repeated Israeli air attack in Syria. An Israeli strike near the Syrian capital of Damascus killed two Guard members in March, prompting Iran to retaliate by firing a missile barrage into northern Iraq.
Security forces were pursuing the suspected assailants, state TV reported, without offering further details or giving a motive for the killing.
Around the same time, state-run media said the Revolutionary Guard's security forces had uncovered and arrested members of an Israeli intelligence network operating in the country, without elaborating on whether they had any connection to Khodaei's slaying.

North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un attended a mass funeral for a top official, state media reported Monday.
The official Korean Central News Agency said Kim attended the funeral Sunday of Hyon Chol Hae, a Korean People's Army marshal who reportedly played a key role in grooming him as the country's next leader before Kim's father died in late 2011.
State media photos showed a bare-faced Kim carrying Hyon's coffin with other men wearing masks before the burial at the national cemetery.
State TV showed video of Kim being handed a shovel at the cemetery before he cast it aside and bent down to use his bare hands to sprinkle earth over the coffin.
KCNA said "a great many" soldiers and citizens earlier turned out along streets to express their condolences when Hyon's coffin was moved to the cemetery.
North Korea has maintained the much-disputed claim that its suspected coronavirus outbreak is subsiding.
Since admitting to an outbreak of the omicron variant earlier this month, North Korea has only stated how many people have fevers daily, and has only identified a few of the cases as COVID-19.
Its state media said Monday that 2.8 million people have fallen ill due to an unidentified fever but only 68 of them died since late April, an extremely low fatality rate if the illness is COVID-19 as suspected.
North Korea has limited testing capability for that many sick people, but some experts say it is also likely underreporting mortalities to protect Kim from political damage.

After a professor reportedly sent an email asking students not to speak Chinese, a US university has removed her as director of a graduate programme. Megan Neely, an assistant professor at Duke University in North Carolina, said in an email that she received complaints from two of her colleagues about students speaking Chinese on the campus and could fetch unintended consequences for the speakers. Many have criticised the professor's email as racist or insensitive.

Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has scoffed at a claim made by Russia. The invading country's promise of using nuclear-powered laser weaponry to shoot down drones in Ukraine was called a nonexistent 'wonder weapon' by Zelenskyy. 
'Wonder weapon' is a reference to a propaganda invention of the Nazis who claimed to be in possession of the weapon that would change things for the Axis power. 
But such a weapon didn't exist and Zelenskyy claims the same is true of Russia's promised laser weapon.

In a concerning incident, two Rafale fighter jets were involved in a mid-air collision, as per news reports. The incident occurred on May 22 during an airshow at the 709 base in Cognac-Chateaubernard in France.
The Rafale aircraft belonged to the 30th Fighter Squadron of the French Air Force. The tailfin of one of the jets was damaged and some debris fell and damaged a house in Gensac-la-Pallue, according to a report in the EurAsian Times.
However, the two aircraft were able to land without difficulty, and no injuries were reported.
One of the Rafale involved in the crash had recently participated in the NATO Tiger Meet military exercise amid the Russia-Ukraine war. The Rafale GA-30 had been painted in special colours for the NATO exercise.
The jets involved in the incident were Rafale C single-seat aircraft from the Vautour Bravo tactical demonstration team which showcases the aircraft's operational capabilities. The French Air Force has launched an investigation into the incident.
In February 2022, another Rafale jet had suffered a technical malfunction. The Rafale's Marine variant had to be redirected to Malta after the nozzle of the refuelling probe fell off and the jet could not be refuelled for a return journey to the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle.
The most serious Rafale accident occurred in 2009 when 2 Rafale Marine jets fell in the Mediterranean sea during a test flight. One pilot went missing, while the other was injured.

President Joe Biden said Monday that the US would intervene militarily if China were to invade Taiwan, saying the burden to protect Taiwan is "even stronger' after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It was one of the most forceful presidential statements in support of self-governing in decades.
Biden, at a news conference in Tokyo, said “yes” when asked if he was willing to get involved militarily to defend Taiwan if China invaded. “That's the commitment we made,” he added.
The US traditionally has avoided making such an explicit security guarantee to Taiwan, with which it no longer has a mutual defense treaty. The 1979 Taiwan Relations Act, which has governed US relations with the island, does not require the US to step in militarily to defend Taiwan if China invades, but makes it American policy to ensure Taiwan has the resources to defend itself and to prevent any unilateral change of status in Taiwan by Beijing.
Biden's comments were likely to draw a sharp response from the mainland, which has claimed Taiwan to be a rogue province.
A White House official said Biden's comments did not reflect a policy shift.
Speaking alongside Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Biden said any effort by China to use force against Taiwan would “just not be appropriate,” adding that it “will dislocate the entire region and be another action similar to what happened in Ukraine.” China has stepped up its military provocations against democratic Taiwan in recent years aimed at intimidating it into accepting Beijing's demands to unify with the communist mainland.
“They're already flirting with danger right now by flying so close and all the maneuvers that are undertaken,” Biden said of China.
Under the “one China” policy, the US recognises Beijing as the government of China and doesn't have diplomatic relations with Taiwan. However, the US maintains unofficial contacts including a de facto embassy in Taipei, the capital, and supplies military equipment for the island's defence.
Biden said it is his “expectation” that China would not try to seize Taiwan by force, but he said that assessment “depends upon just how strong the world makes clear that that kind of action is going to result in long-term disapprobation by the rest of the community." He added that deterring China from attacking Taiwan was one reason why it's important that Russian President Vladimir Putin "pay a dear price for his barbarism in Ukraine," lest China and other nations get the idea that such action is acceptable.
Fearing escalation with nuclear-armed Russia, Biden quickly ruled out putting US forces into direct conflict with Russia, but he has shipped billions of dollars in US military assistance that has helped Ukraine put up a stiffer-than-expected resistance to Russia's onslaught.
Biden's comments came just before he formally launched a long-anticipated Indo-Pacific trade pact that excludes Taiwan.
White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan confirmed Sunday that Taiwan isn't among the governments signed up for the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, which is meant to allow the US to work more closely with key Asian economies on issues like supply chains, digital trade, clean energy and anti-corruption.
Inclusion of Taiwan would have irked China.
Sullivan said the US wants to deepen its economic partnership with Taiwan on a one-to-one basis.
