The US House of Representatives has passed a resolution to formally proceed with the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump. The Democratic-controlled House voted by 232 to 196 to establish how to hold public hearings in Congress. The vote was the first formal test of support for impeachment and could be damaging for Trump ahead of the 2020 presidential election. Trump took to Twitter to condemn the vote, calling it "the greatest witch hunt in American history". President Trump is accused of trying to pressure Ukraine into investigating unsubstantiated corruption claims against his political rival, Joe Biden, and his son. Trump has denied wrongdoing and called the inquiry a sham.
