As per the old report by a team of scientists at MIT, civilization was bound to collapse if corporations and governments continued to pursue economic growth, irrespective of its environmental damage. It also said that natural resources would become so scarce that further economic growth would become impossible, and personal welfare would nosedive.
The most infamous scenario forecast&nbsp;by the report says that by 2040, the world&rsquo;s economic growth would peak but thereafter, the graph will take a sharp downturn. This will severely impact the global population with regard to food availability and natural resources. This imminent collapse will not end the human race, but the standard of human living conditions will degrade drastically.
Now, nearly half a century later, Gaya Herrington who is a Sustainability and Dynamic System Analysis Lead at KPMG,&nbsp;reassessed the MIT study to observe the predictions made in 1972. And to her horror, there is a close alignment to all the predicted scenarios. Herrington wrote in her study that the scenarios indicate that continuing business as usual to pursue constant growth, will not be possible after 2040. &nbsp;
But beyond all this, there is a silver lining. Herrington says that changes in policies like population control, reduced industrial output and prioritising health and education are the factors that can prevent this horrific downfall. Using the example of covid 19 pandemic and how the world dealt with this global crisis, she says that it is still possible to control the situation.
Herrington believes that it's not yet too late for human society to intentionally change its course and alter the trajectory of the future.

The estimated $740 billion package heads next to the House, where lawmakers are poised to deliver on Biden's priorities, a stunning turnaround of what had seemed a lost and doomed effort that suddenly roared back to political life. Democrats held united, 51-50, with Vice President Kamala Harris casting the tie-breaking vote.
&ldquo;It's been a long, tough and winding road, but at last, at last, we have arrived,&rdquo; said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., ahead of final votes.
&ldquo;The Senate is making history. I am confident the Inflation Reduction Act will endure as one of the defining legislative measures of the 21st century.&rdquo;
Republican amendments shunned
Senators engaged in a round-the-clock marathon of voting that began Saturday and stretched late into Sunday afternoon. Democrats swatted down some three dozen Republican amendments designed to torpedo the legislation. Confronting unanimous GOP opposition, Democratic unity in the 50-50 chamber held, keeping the party on track for a morale-boosting victory three months from elections when congressional control is at stake.
&nbsp;&ldquo;I think it&rsquo;s gonna pass,&rdquo; Biden told reporters as he left the White House early Sunday to go to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, ending his COVID-19 isolation. The House seemed likely to provide final congressional approval when it returns briefly from summer recess on Friday.
The bill ran into trouble midday over objections to the new 15% corporate minimum tax that private equity firms and other industries disliked, forcing last-minute changes.
Inflation Reduction Act a win for Democrats
Despite the momentary setback, the &ldquo;Inflation Reduction Act&rdquo; gives Democrats a campaign-season showcase for action on coveted goals. It includes the largest-ever federal effort on climate change &mdash; close to $400 billion &mdash; caps out-of-pocket drug costs for seniors on Medicare to $2,000 a year and extends expiring subsidies that help 13 million people afford health insurance. By raising corporate taxes, the whole package is paid for, with some $300 billion extra revenue for deficit reduction.
Barely more than one-tenth the size of Biden&rsquo;s initial 10-year, $3.5 trillion rainbow of progressive aspirations in his Build Back Better initiative, the new package abandons earlier proposals for universal preschool, paid family leave and expanded child care aid. That plan collapsed after conservative Sen. Joe. Manchin, D-W.Va., opposed it, saying it was too costly and would fuel inflation.
Nonpartisan analysts have said the &ldquo;Inflation Reduction Act&rdquo; would have a minor effect on surging consumer prices.
Bill would hurt job creation: Republicans
Republicans said the measure would undermine an economy that policymakers are struggling to keep from plummeting into recession. They said the bill's business taxes would hurt job creation and force prices skyward, making it harder for people to cope with the nation's worst inflation since the 1980s.

&ldquo;Democrats have already robbed American families once through inflation, and now their solution is to rob American families a second time," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., argued. He said spending and tax increases in the legislation would eliminate jobs while having an insignificant impact on inflation and climate change.
Overnight &lsquo;vote-a-rama&rsquo;
In an ordeal imposed on all budget bills like this one, the Senate had to endure an overnight &ldquo;vote-a-rama&rdquo; of rapid-fire amendments. Each tested Democrats' ability to hold together a compromise negotiated by Schumer, progressives, Manchin and the inscrutable centrist Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz.
Progressive Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., offered amendments to further expand the legislation's health benefits, and those efforts were defeated. Most votes were forced by Republicans and many were designed to make Democrats look soft on U. S.-Mexico border security and gasoline and energy costs, and like bullies for wanting to strengthen IRS tax law enforcement.
Before the debate began Saturday, the bill's prescription drug price curbs were diluted by the Senate's nonpartisan parliamentarian. Elizabeth MacDonough, who referees questions about the chamber's procedures, said a provision should fall that would impose costly penalties on drug makers whose price increases for private insurers exceed inflation.
It was the bill's chief protection for the 180 million people with private health coverage they get through work or purchase themselves. Under special procedures that will let Democrats pass their bill by a simple majority without the usual 60-vote margin, its provisions must be focused more on dollar-and-cents budget numbers than policy changes.
But the thrust of their pharmaceutical price language remained. That included letting Medicare negotiate what it pays for drugs for its 64 million elderly recipients, penalizing manufacturers for exceeding inflation for pharmaceuticals sold to Medicare and limiting beneficiaries' out-of-pocket drug costs to $2,000 annually.
The bill also caps Medicare patients' costs for insulin, the expensive diabetes medication, at $35 monthly. Democrats wanted to extend the $35 cap to private insurers but it ran afoul of Senate rules. Most Republicans voted to strip it from the package, though in a sign of the political potency of health costs seven GOP senators joined Democrats trying to preserve it.
The measure's final costs were being recalculated to reflect late changes, but overall it would raise more than $700 billion over a decade. The money would come from a 15% minimum tax on a handful of corporations with yearly profits above $1 billion, a 1% tax on companies that repurchase their own stock, bolstered IRS tax collections and government savings from lower drug costs.
Sinema forced Democrats to drop a plan to prevent wealthy hedge fund managers from paying less than individual income tax rates for their earnings. She also joined with other Western senators to win $4 billion to combat the region's drought.
Several Democratic senators joined the GOP-led effort to exclude some firms from the new corporate minimum tax.
The package keeps to Biden's pledge not to raise taxes on those earning less than $400,000 a year.
It was on the energy and environment side that compromise was most evident between progressives and Manchin, a champion of fossil fuels and his state's coal industry.
Clean energy would be fostered with tax credits for buying electric vehicles and manufacturing solar panels and wind turbines. There would be home energy rebates, funds for constructing factories building clean energy technology and money to promote climate-friendly farm practices and reduce pollution in minority communities.
Manchin won billions to help power plants lower carbon emissions plus language requiring more government auctions for oil drilling on federal land and waters. Party leaders also promised to push separate legislation this fall to accelerate permits for energy projects, which Manchin wants to include a nearly completed natural gas pipeline in his state.

In a phone interview, Lisa Krimsky, a researcher and faculty member with Florida Sea Grant and a water resources regional specialized agent at University of Florida told the Associated Press that 2022 has been the worst year on record.
She said large masses of seaweed have a severe environmental impact, with decaying algae altering water temperatures and the pH balance as well as leading to declines in seagrass, coral reef and sponge populations.
Barbados has been especially hard hit since flying fish make up 60% of the island's annual landed catch, according to the University of the West Indies.
Activists are also concerned about the plight of endangered turtles, with some dying entangled in the water or unable to lay their eggs given the mat of algae covering the sand.

India backs UN resolution to recognise human right to clean, healthy environment; raises concern over text

India said that the terms &lsquo;clean&rsquo;, &lsquo;healthy&rsquo; and &lsquo;sustainable&rsquo; remain open to subjective interpretations and that the resolution fails to have a &ldquo;clear reference&rdquo; to the foundational principle of equity in international environmental law.&nbsp;

India has voted in favour of a UN General Assembly resolution that recognises the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment as a human right, but dissociated itself from an operative paragraph of the text and voiced its concerns over the procedure and substance of the resolution.
The 193-member General Assembly adopted the resolution on Thursday with 161 votes in favour and abstentions by Belarus, Cambodia, China, Ethiopia, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Syria.
While India voted in favour of the resolution, it voiced its concerns over the procedure and substance of the resolution.
The resolution &ldquo;recognises the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment as a human right&rdquo; and "affirms that the promotion of the human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment requires the full implementation of the multilateral environmental agreements under the principles of international environmental law.&rdquo; &ldquo;India stands ready to support any effort for a better environment and to further international cooperation for environmental protection. In this context, India voted in favour of this resolution,&rdquo; Counsellor in India&rsquo;s Permanent Mission to the UN Ashish Sharma said, delivering the explanation of the vote in the UNGA.
&ldquo;However, considering that our concerns remain outstanding, we are, therefore, constrained to dissociate ourselves with the operative paragraph 1 of the resolution,&rdquo; he said.
The operative paragraph 1 of the resolution reads that the UNGA &ldquo;Recognises the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment as a human right.&rdquo; He requested that this statement be included in the official records in the meeting. He asserted that the UNGA resolutions do not in themselves create binding obligations, and it is only through conventions and treaties that State parties commit to a &ldquo;new human right and undertake appropriate obligations for the realisation of such a right.

&ldquo;Further, there is no clear understanding and agreed definition of terms &lsquo;clean&rsquo;, &lsquo;healthy&rsquo; and &lsquo;sustainable&rsquo;. Currently, these terms remain open to subjective interpretations and thereby dilutes the very objective of the recognition proclaimed in the present resolution,&rdquo; Sharma said.
He voiced regret that the text of the resolution fails to have a &ldquo;clear reference&rdquo; to the foundational principle of equity in international environmental law.
Noting that India attaches great importance to the promotion and protection of human rights, including in the context of environment, Sharma said New Delhi had expressed its concerns on the resolution both in terms of procedure and substance.
India had also expressed its concerns clearly and repeatedly, and made constructive proposals to achieve common ground.
&ldquo;We sincerely believe that some of these proposals could have helped in bringing us closer to the consensus.&rdquo; He said India also remains concerned that even after strong support by many member states for the inclusion of preambular paragraph 8 of the Human Rights Council resolution 48/13, which forms the basis of the current resolution, the decision of the core group was otherwise.
&ldquo;It is an important paragraph that reaffirms the importance of international cooperation, on the basis of mutual respect, in full compliance with the principles and purposes of the Charter, with full respect for the sovereignty of States while taking into account national priorities,&rdquo; Sharma said.
Sharma referred to the preambular paragraph 8 of the Human Rights Council resolution that pertained to &lsquo;The human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.&rsquo; He also noted that throughout the negotiations, India engaged constructively with an aim to reach a consensual outcome.
While appreciating the efforts of the core group - Costa Rica, the Maldives, Morocco, Slovenia and Switzerland - he said India believes that providing more time to discussions could have helped in bridging the differences and addressing the concerns of various delegations.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the adoption of the &ldquo;historic resolution&rdquo;, saying it demonstrates that the member states can come together in &ldquo;our collective fight against the triple planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.
The international community has given universal recognition to this right and brought us closer to making it a reality for all.&rdquo; He however noted that adoption of the resolution is only the beginning and urged states to make the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment a reality for everyone, everywhere.
"The resolution will help reduce environmental injustices, close protection gaps and empower people, especially those that are in vulnerable situations, including environmental human rights defenders, children, youth, women and indigenous peoples. The resolution will also help states accelerate the implementation of their environmental and human rights obligations and commitments.&rdquo; President of the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly Abdulla Shahid said in a tweet that the UNGA adopted a historic resolution that &ldquo;recognised for the first time, that everyone, everywhere, has a human right to live in a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.&rdquo; Sharma stressed that environmental protection is part of India&rsquo;s cultural values and &ldquo;our traditions have for long stressed the importance of living in harmony with nature.&rdquo; He pointed out that at COP26, the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had proposed a one-word movement, LIFE, a mass movement that influences lifestyle for the environment, promoting mindful and deliberate utilisation of resources instead of mindless and destructive consumption.
&ldquo;India is making rapid strides towards inclusive and overall sustainable development. This is being done both at the national level and globally through international partnerships,&rdquo; he said.
He said that India has worked with partners for significant global initiatives for environmental protection that include the International Solar Alliance, the focus on One Sun, One World, One Grid, Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure and Leadership Group for Industry Transition.&nbsp;

The Chile earthquake and tsunami of February 2010 were also caused by HAARP, according to some accounts. The 8.8-magnitude temblor caused over 500 deaths. A massive landslide in Philippines in 2006 has also been linked to HAARP. It had killed more than a thousand people.
These conspiracy theories are not limited to some sections of the internet. Even some world leaders have openly propagated these claims.
In 2010, then President of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said recent floods in Pakistan had been caused by HAARP project's electromagnetic waves. He also accused European nations of draining rainclouds before they could reach Iran, causing water shortages in the Asian country.
In the same year, then President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez said a tectonic weapon being tested by America had caused the deadly Haiti earthquake. Chavez claimed that it was just a test-run before America uses the weapon on Iran.
Despite such loud proclamations, conspiracy theorists don't explain how some antennae in the US could cause quakes thousands of kilometres away. Instead, they claim that the details are closely guarded by the American government.
So, what exactly is the HAARP project? HAARP is an acronym for High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program. Its objective is to study the highest portions of Earth's atmosphere.
HAARP sends high-frequency radio waves to the ionosphere. These radio waves heat electrons at altitudes above 60 km. Then, scientists study the resulting perturbations in the ionosphere. The aim is to improve communication, and navigation systems.
HAARP was managed by the US Air Force, and Navy from 1990 to 2014. In 2015, the facility was handed over to University of Alaska Fairbanks.
While HAARP has not responded specifically to earthquake claims, it has responded to weather manipulation theories. HAARP scientists have stated that the facility cannot control weather. Earth's weather is produced in the troposphere and stratosphere. HAARP's radio waves don't interact with these lower layers of the atmosphere. Scientists have said that if ionospheric storms caused by the Sun can't affect Earth's weather, then HAARP definitely cannot.
But this does not mean that artificial earthquakes are impossible. There are at least two ways that humans can cause earthquakes.
The first is fracking or hydraulic fracturing which is used to extract oil and natural gas. Wastewater produced by fracking is pumped into deep, underground wells, and this can cause temblors.
The second way to create a quake is through nuclear explosions. Quakes caused by nuclear blasts are much smaller than the explosion, and not all blasts cause quakes. The range of these is a few tens of kilometres, as per the USGS.
A fabled earthquake machine has also been linked to the enigmatic inventor Nikola Tesla. Some accounts say that in the 1980s, Tesla built a steam-powered oscillator which was designed to vibrate at various frequencies.
The machine reportedly caused violent vibrations in a New York building, causing panic among people in the area who thought it was an earthquake. Tesla wanted to use the machine to transmit electricity via vibrations in the ground.
The genius inventor believed that a powerful-enough machine could even cause earthquakes. However, the idea didn't progress beyond the prototype stage.
Although conspiracy theorists obsess over HAARP, it is not the only project of its kind. There is the Ionospheric Research Facility at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. Then there is the defunct Ionospheric Research Station in Kharkiv, Ukraine. There is also an Ionospheric Heating &amp; Short-wave Radar Facility in Tromso, Norway.
With social media's reach continuing to grow, and scientific projects becoming more and more complex, authorities need to improve their communication so that conspiracy theories don't go from being internet conversations to ignitors of mass panic.

Now, the Chief Minister of Telangana has floated a conspiracy theory. K. Chandrashekar Rao recently said, "There is this new phenomenon called cloudburst. People say there is some conspiracy, we don't know how far that is true, that people from other countries are deliberately doing cloudburst in our country at certain locations. In the past they did it near Kashmir, at Ladakh-Leh, then in Uttarakhand and now we are getting some reports that they are doing it in the Godavari region."
Could this be true? Could an enemy nation be engineering cloudbursts and flash floods in India?

The most widely-known weather modification technique to artificially increase rainfall is cloud seeding. Clouds are made up of water droplets and ice crystals. These are formed when water vapour in the atmosphere condenses around tiny dust or salt particles.
Without these small particles, or nuclei, drops wouldn't form, and rain won't fall. Cloud seeding increases the number of nuclei in clouds so that water vapour gets more particles to form drops or snowflakes.
There are three major methods of cloud seeding. The first technique is static seeding in which a chemical, like silver iodide, is inserted into clouds via ground-based generators or diffused from planes.
The second technique is dynamic seeding which uses up to 100 times more ice crystals than static seeding. This is a complex procedure with over 10 stages, and an error in any stage can ruin the entire process.
The third technique is hygroscopic in which salts are inserted into the lower portions of clouds through flares or explosives. Experts say this method is promising but requires further research.
Cloud seeding is mostly popular as a civilian technology, being used to increase rainfall in dry areas, or to combat effects of climate change. But could it be used as a weapon too?
Just a couple of decades after scientists developed the concept of cloud seeding, America deployed it as a weapon in Vietnam. This operation in the 1960s is the first confirmed use of meteorological warfare.
The US Air Force conducted cloud seeding operations to hinder the movement of North Vietnamese troops, and also suppress anti-aircraft missile fire at US planes. The operation led to flooding of communication lines, but some officials said that the results were not dramatic.
The weaponisation of weather by America caused global alarm, and in 1978, the Convention on the Prohibition of Military or Any Other Hostile Use of Environmental Modification went into force.
Does this mean that India has nothing to fear from weather warfare? The answer may not be so easy.
Cloud seeding is actually a major strategy employed by India's biggest competitor China. Weather modification has been institutionalised in China since Mao Zedong's rule. Beijing has used cloud seeding to drain clouds of moisture and ensure clear skies at major events. This was done ahead of the 2008 Olympics opening ceremony, and before the 70th anniversary of the People's Republic of China festivities.
China's mega cloud seeding projects employ around 35,000 people, and now Beijing is planning a massive expansion. China reportedly wants to cover an area more than one-and-a-half times India's size with cloud seeded rain. This is causing major worry in India, as rainfall patterns in the region may get affected, and even the Brahmaputra river's flow may be impacted.
But what about actually causing cloudbursts on Indian territory? Could a hostile nation be behind the floods in Telangana, as the Chief Minister claimed?
This is unlikely, because of two major reasons. Firstly, a cloud seeding plane from a foreign country would have to fly undetected in Indian airspace to be able to inject chemicals in clouds. Secondly, this would only work on clouds which already have high moisture content, as cloud seeding doesn't create water in clouds, only helps it fall in greater quantities.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, cloudburst is defined as unexpected rainfall exceeding 10cm per hour over a 20-30 sq km region.
However, research has thrown up a mixed bag when it comes to the effeCtiveness of cloud seeding. In USA's Nevada, long-term projects increased snowpack by around 10%. A 5-year project in Australia's New South Wales increased snowfall by around 14%. However, another study in USA's Wyoming said that cloud seeding would increase snowpack only by around 1.5%.
With climate change wreaking havoc, extreme weather events in India are becoming more common. In such a situation, it would be better if the Telangana Chief Minister either provides proof of his serious claim, or takes steps to reduce the impact of floods and other calamities on common people.

Explaining the heatwave in Europe, Kai Kornhuber, a researcher at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, part of Columbia University, was quoted by The Indian Express as saying, &ldquo;Low-pressure zones tend to draw air toward them. According to a study published in the journal Applied Energy, opening the windows at night and pulling down the shades during the afternoon can protect your house from becoming a heat hazard during extreme heatwaves.
Researchers found that shades and natural ventilation can keep your house temperatures out of the danger zone during a heatwave. It also reduces the load on air conditioning by up to 80 per cent.&nbsp;
Thanks to climate change, such extreme heat events are expected to be more frequent. So figuring out how to make a home livable during the intense summer heat becomes an increasingly urgent issue.&nbsp;
Such passive cooling strategies can be a lifeline for people without air conditioning. And even people with air conditioning can use this technique to lower their summer energy bills, researchers concluded.

The desire by the world&rsquo;s affluent to consume out-of-season produce is making large contributions to global greenhouse gas emissions, new research has suggested. The study also found that food is responsible for about 16 billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year.&nbsp;
For the study, experts used the concept of &ldquo;food miles&rdquo; to measure the distance a food item travels from where it&rsquo;s produced to where it&rsquo;s consumed. Researchers analysed 74 countries, 37 economic sectors and four transport modes; water, rail, road and air.&nbsp;
As per the findings, high-income countries are disproportionate contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. They constitute 12.5% of the world&rsquo;s population yet generate 46% of international greenhouse gas&nbsp;emissions.
Eating food grown and produced locally is a powerful way to take action on climate change. Consumers also have the power to reduce food transport emissions by adopting a more sustainable diet, researchers concluded.&nbsp;

As per reports, the United States, China and Brazil are responsible for a staggering 44.6 per cent of all the world&rsquo;s plastic packaging and the majority of it is wrapped around food.
If we look at the UN data, 20 to 30 per cent of food produced is wasted. Pertinently, that the environmental problems connected to food are larger than the ones plastic packaging causes. The food humans consume is responsible for 21 to 37 per cent of global climate change.
Consumers mostly waste packaged food because it has gone bad or has expired. Plastic packaging is used to preserve food, but it contributes to food waste. Hence, there is a need to consider food and its packaging as a unit.&nbsp; The issue of food waste cannot be solved in isolation from the issue of plastic packaging. Better serving instructions or smaller packaging could save tonnes of foods from being wasted and therefore reduce food waste. The problems clearly is entwined.
