UK's NHS won't be using the Apple-Google Covid-19 tracing protocol

Apr 28, 2020 14:10 IST

According to a BBC report, the UK's National Health Service has said it will not be using Apple and Google's jointly developed protocol to use digital contact tracing for tracking the community spread of Covid-19. The protocol being created by the tech giants employs a decentralised approach, storing tracking data on the devices of people that are being traced. The NHS, meanwhile, wants to use a centralised model, where in a central server will have access to the location data of people opting in to the service. Apple and Google have faced contention in Europe over their approach, which they say protects user privacy from authorities and hackers.
