Canada signed a contract with AstraZeneca in 2020 to get 20 million doses of its vaccine, and 2.3 million Canadians received at least one dose of it, mostly between March and June 2021.
Following concerns in the spring of 2021 about rare but potentially fatal blood clots from AstraZeneca, Canada focused on using its ample supplies of the mRNA vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.
In July 2021, Canada promised to donate the rest of its procured supply, about 17.7 million doses. But in a statement Tuesday, Health Canada said that despite efforts to meet that pledge, 13.6 million doses have expired and will have to be thrown out.
"Due to limited demand for the vaccine and recipient country challenges with distribution and absorption, they were not accepted?" the statement said.
In all, Canada donated 8.9 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine — 4.8 millon doses from its main supply and 4.1 million doses that it bought from the COVAX vaccine-sharing programme.

The gunman who attacked an Independence Day parade in suburban Chicago fired more than 70 rounds with an AR-15-style gun that killed at least six people, then evaded initial capture by dressing as a woman and blending into the fleeing crowd, police said Tuesday.
A spokesman for the Lake County Major Crime Task Force told a news conference that the suspected shooter, who was arrested late Monday, used a high-powered rifle “similar to an AR-15" to spray bullets from atop a commercial building into a crowd that had gathered for the parade in Highland Park, a close-knit community on the shores of Lake Michigan that has long drawn the rich and sometimes famous.
More than 30 people were wounded in the attack, which task force spokesman Christopher Covelli said the shooter planned for several weeks.
Investigators who have interrogated the suspect and reviewed his social media posts have not determined a motive for the attack or found any indication that he targeted anyone by race, religion or other protected status, Covelli said.
Authorities have not filed criminal charges.
Earlier in the day, FBI agents peeked into trash cans and under picnic blankets as they searched for more evidence at the site where the assailant opened fire. The shots were initially mistaken for fireworks before hundreds of revellers fled in terror.
A day later, baby strollers, lawn chairs and other items left behind by panicked parade goers remained inside a wide police perimeter. Outside the police tape, some residents drove up to collect blankets and chairs they abandoned.

“I recognise this may be last ministerial job, but I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning,” he said.
It came soon after Johnson said he "bitterly regrets" giving Pincher a government role as Deputy Chief Whip after being made aware of a misconduct complaint against him.
"In hindsight it was the wrong thing to do and I apologise to everyone who has been badly affected by it. I just want to make absolutely clear that there's no place in this government for anybody who is predatory or abuses their position of power," he said.
Sajid Javid, a British citizen of Pakistani origin, in his resignation letter said, "We [Conservative party] may not have always been popular, but we have been competent in acting in the national interest. Sadly, in the current circumstances, the public are concluding that we are now neither.
"The vote of confidence last month showed that a large number of our colleagues agree.
"I regret to say, however, that it is clear to me that this situation will not change under your leadership and you have therefore lost my confidence too.

The plot is 19 km, or a 20-minute drive, from a major military base. The Grand Forks base is a sensitive drone facility managed by the US Air Force. The Air Force Base reportedly houses some of America's most sensitive drone technology, and also a new space networking centre. The networking centre is "the backbone of all US military communication across the globe", according to a US senator who spoke to CNBC.

A US Air Force officer has warned that drone and satellite transmissions could easily be surveilled from the Chinese factory. Major Jeremy Fox reportedly said that passive receiving equipment like antennae could be used for spying.
These antennae would simply need to be tuned to the right frequencies to intercept drone and space-based communication. Transmissions to and from the base could easily be collected. To add to the threat, this passive signal collection would be undetectable by the US.
The Air Force officer raised alarm about the espionage threat in an internal memo. Major Fox reportedly said that data collection by China would "present a costly national security risk". He warned that the case may cause grave damage to US strategic advantages, and that it fits a pattern of Chinese subnational espionage. Major Fox accused Beijing of using commercial economic development projects to get close to Defense Department facilities.

However, the US Air Force has not taken an official position on the matter. The force called Major Fox's comments his personal effort to raise awareness of potential vulnerabilities.
But the soldier's worries have been mirrored by US politicians. Republican Senator Kevin Cramer, who represents North Dakota, said that he doesn't want the Chinese Communist Party doing business in his "backyard". Senator Cramer said America underestimates Beijing's capability to collect data and use it in "nefarious ways".
Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Mark Warner, is also worried about Chinese spying. Commenting on the North Dakota situation, the Democrat party leader said that America should be "seriously concerned" about Chinese investments near sensitive US facilities.
The allegations have agitated China. Fufeng USA's COO has insisted that there is no possibility of espionage from the North Dakota plant.The company has insisted that the $700 million project is just a corn milling plant The company says that it is helping the local community by creating 200 direct jobs, and other opportunities like logistics.
The Chinese government has also entered the debate, with an official telling the New York Post that Chinese firms investing abroad are told to obey local laws. Beijing criticised USA's 'generalisation of the concept of national security and abuse of state power". China also sought a fair and just environment for its companies in the US.
This case is not just important for America, but also pertinent for countries like India which have seen tension with China rise in recent years.
The Indian government has in the past raised the issue of Chinese companies being misused to threaten India's national security. A ban on multiple Chinese apps, including PUBG, was imposed due to alleged stealing and transmission of user data.
In such a situation, Delhi might need to keep an eye on Chinese investments in India, especially near military installations.

Taliban founder Mullah Umar is buried somewhere in Afghanistan but what you are seeing on your screens is his car being dug out from a grave.
A Toyota Wagon belonging to Mullah Umar has been dug up by the Taliban from Zabul province of Afghanistan where it was buried 21 years ago. 
The images of the car being shared online show the car wrapped in plastic. 
According to reports, the car will be cleaned and displayed at the Afghan National Museum
The Taliban founder had used the Toyoya Wagon to travel to Zabul from Kandahar when the US forces invaded Afghanistan in 2001 and then hid the car by burying it.

A Toyota Wagon belonging to Mullah Umar has been dug up by the Taliban from Zabul province of Afghanistan where it was buried 21 years ago. 

The Taliban founder had used the Toyoya Wagon to travel to Zabul from Kandahar when the US forces invaded Afghanistan in 2001 and then hid the car by burying it.&nbsp;

Taliban founder Mullah Umar is buried somewhere in Afghanistan but now a Toyota Wagon belonging to him has been dug up by the Taliban from Zabul province of Afghanistan where it was buried 21 years ago.&nbsp;
The images of the car being shared online show the car wrapped in plastic.&nbsp;
According to reports, the car will be cleaned and displayed at the Afghan National Museum
The Taliban founder had used the Toyoya Wagon to travel to Zabul from Kandahar when the US forces invaded Afghanistan in 2001 and then hid the car by burying it.&nbsp;

International Space Station witnessed a brief scare as the new Russian Nauka module faced problems after docking in.
The Russian module inadvertently fired its thrusters causing a "tug of war" with the space station. The impact briefly pushed the ISS out of position on Thursday morning, according to NASA flight controllers.
NASA officials declared it a "spacecraft emergency" as the space station experienced a loss of attitude, the angle at which the ISS is supposed to remain oriented for nearly one hour. Reports said ground controllers lost communications with the seven astronauts currently aboard the ISS for 11 minutes during the ordeal. 
The engines of another module on the space station were then activated to compensate and reposition the ISS
A joint investigation between NASA and the Russian space agency Roscosmos is now ongoing.

On the sidelines of Algerian independence anniversary celebrations on Tuesday, Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh met publicly for the first time in over five years.
The duo had officially last met face-to-face in Doha in October 2016 and were brought together in a meeting with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, whose country marked the 60th anniversary of independence from France. 
The meeting holds significance as Abbas’ secular Fatah party, which dominates the Palestinian Authority that rules the Israeli-occupied West Bank, has been at loggerheads with Hamas since elections in 2007, which is when the Islamists took control of Gaza. 
Tebboune and Abbas also signed a document to name a street in the West Bank city of Ramallah as “Algeria” .

After Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), India has now reportedly proposed to hold the G-20 meeting in 2023 in the Union Territory of Ladakh as well. The move might provoke a response from China which has already expressed its displeasure over New Delhi’s plans to host the intergovernmental summit in J&K next year.
India, which will be hosting the 2023 G-20 summit, on June 30 stated it is considering several venues for the meeting and J&K could be one such venue. The same day China echoed close ally Pakistan’s objection to India’s plans and said that relevant sides should avoid "unilateral moves" that may "complicate" the situation. “China's position on the Kashmir issue is consistent and clear-cut. The Kashmir issue, a dispute left from the past, should be peacefully and properly addressed in accordance with the UN Charter, Security Council resolutions and bilateral agreement,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian told a media briefing. This comes at a time when bilateral relations between India and China are at their lowest following a major standoff between the armies of the two countries along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) which is yet to be resolved.  
If the proposal materialises, this will be the first international summit to be held in J&K and Ladakh post August 2019 which is when the Centre abrogated Article 370 and bifurcated the state provoking strong reaction from both China and Pakistan.

That triggered a series of reports about past allegations levelled against Pincher and questions about why Johnson promoted him to a senior job enforcing party discipline. The resignations come after months of scandals and missteps, including a damning report into parties that broke strict Covid-19 lockdowns and the resignation of Conservative MP Neil Parish after he was caught watching pornography on his mobile phone in the House of Commons.  He is also facing a parliamentary probe into whether he lied to MPs over the lockdown-breaching parties in Downing Street. Johnson has also come under fire for not doing enough to tackle a cost-of-living crisis, with many Britons struggling to cope with rising fuel and food prices. Economists say the country is now heading for a sharp slowdown or possibly a recession.

This is after the silicon valley of India topped the central government's 'Ease of Living Index' in 2020.&nbsp;
Released on June 24, the Global Liveability Index 2022 prepared by the European Intelligence Unit (EUI) ranked 173 cities based on their liveability or living conditions, determined by five factors- including stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.&nbsp;
The index ranked five Indian cities: Delhi, which ranked the best at 140, followed by Mumbai at 141, Chennai at 142, Ahmedabad at 143, and Bengaluru at 146. As per the report, the ideal rank for cities is under 100, but all Indian cities have scored way beyond the mark.
Bengaluru recieved a score of 46.4 out of 100 in the field of infrastructure, way below our neighbour Pakistan's largest city Karachi which scored 51.8 on the indicator and figured among the five least lievable cities in the world in the index.&nbsp;
Infrastructure is given 20 percent weightage by the EIU and is judged based on the quality of roads, public transportation system, international links, energy provision, telecommunications, water, and availability of good quality housing.
The highest weightage is attached to stability and culture and environment, which account for 25 percent each, followed by healthcare and infrastructure with 20 percent each and education with 10 percent. &nbsp;
Austria's Vienna ranked the highest on the index followed by other European and Canadian cities such as Copenhagen, Zurich, Calgary, and Vancouver that made it to the top five liveable cities. The Syrian capital, Damascus is the least livable city in the world, as per the report.

The United Kingdom Prime Minister had barely managed to find replacement for Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid after they quit as finance minister and health secretary respectively when a minister and a ministerial aide resigned from his cabinet. 
British minister for children and families Will Quince said he was resigning  after being given an 'inaccurate' briefing over PM's appointment of a politician who was the subject of complaints.
Meanwhile, Laura Trott, a British lawmaker belonging to Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Conservative Party, stepped down from her role as parliamentary private secretary to the department of transport.
