Tokyo 2020 Olympics have been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In a joint statement released by the International Olympic Committee and the Government of Japan, it was decided that the games will be postponed by a year and will take place in the summer of 2021. The decision was taken after a conference call between Japanese PM Shinzo Abe and IOC President Thomas Bach. The games will keep the name of Tokyo 2020 but will be organised no later than the summer of 2021. There have been months of speculations about the future of the Tokyo Games but due to the acceleration of the pandemic led to the postponement. Interestingly, while it is agreed that the games will take place next year but can't be postponed further than 2021.
