The annual Venice Carnival opened with the 'flight of the angel', as thousands of people gathered to witness the ceremony at St. Mark's Square. A Venetian woman was dressed in an orange ball gown and she descended down from the bell tower on a cable. Her outfit, with plumes, was meant to resemble a popular local drink called the spritz. Revellers dressed up in elaborate costumes but the festivities were overshadowed by concerns of the coronavirus and global warming. In November last year, floods damaged parts of the city raising many concerns. The carnival this year runs till the 25th of February.
