This artist is keeping calligraphy culture alive in India

Apr 02, 2020 18:53 IST

Renowned calligrapher from New Delhi, Qamar Dagar is keeping the calligraphy culture alive in India amid increasing digitization. India was a hub of Perso-Arabic, Sanskrit, and other ancient forms of calligraphy back in the day. Dagar uses an abstract style called pictorial calligraphy that combines lettering and imagery. She likes to pick a letter from a word and elaborate it so that it becomes the focal point. In 2017, she received the Nari Shakti Award - the highest civilian honor for a woman in India. She has launched the Qalamkaari Creative Calligraphy Trust, which organizes events for artists to share their work with the public.
