A renowned dancer from Tamil Nadu, Narthaki Nataraj has become the first transgender to be awarded with the Padma Shri award. Speaking to ANI about the achievement, she stated that she's been honoured with the award for her merit and talent as a Bharatnatyam dancer and not on her gender or identity.

The annual Cologne Carnival in Germany has kick-started! Over 200 floats and 300 tonnes of candy are all set to travel along an 8-kilometre-long route in the coming days. The six-day event, which began on 28th February saw revellers in colourful costumes, decorated masks and painted faces on day one.

The 12 ‘Marias’, young women chosen to represent Venice at the city's famous carnival, made their entrance to St Mark's Square last weekend, followed by a colourful procession of people in historical costumes and flag throwers. The tradition of the carnival began in Venice in the 11th century. The parade of the Marias is inspired by the story of twelve brides-to-be who were kidnapped by pirates and freed by the population in 1039.

The annual 10-day Taj Mahotsav in Agra has kicked off and will go on till the 27th of February. The festival, which is based on the theme of 'parampara' this year, provides a platform to showcase the rich culture and heritage of India. Artisans from across the country have displayed their exquisite wood, marble and zardosi art work. It will also feature cultural performances by renowned artists like Usha Uthup and Jasbir Jassi. Elephant and camel rides and a 'fun fair' are major attractions of the festival. 

The 44th edition of the Khajuraho Dance festival will kickstart today. The six-day festival will see celebrated artists from across the country, like Bharatanatyam dancer Hema Tharuna-Kalaanjali and Darsha Jhaveri. A melange of Odissi, Kuchipudi, Manipuri and Kathakali dances will be showcased at the event. Apart from dance, the festival will also celebrate the rich socio-cultural heritage of India and will conclude on February 26.

India's largest carnival festival will take place in Goa from the 2nd to the 5th of March. Live bands and dances in huge parades will take over the streets, celebrating the rich culture and cuisine of the region. The parade features  thousands of people wearing quirky masks and unique costumes. It is led by King Momo, who's chosen from the crowd. The three-day affair marks the climax of the tourist season in Goa. 

Thousands of people, some dressed as their favorite superhero or heroine, attended a street party in Rio de Janeiro ahead of the world famous carnival that begins early next month. Formed in the 1920s by locals, the 'blocos', or street parties, appeared mainly in the suburbs as an alternative to the big carnival celebrations. It is an opportunity for neighborhoods to get together and organize their own impromptu parade.

The 17th edition of the Ishara International Puppet Theatre Festival has kick-started in New Delhi. Performers from four continents have come together to showcase various forms of puppetry, from rod to string puppets coupled with dance and music. The event will display an unconventional act this year, using soap bubbles as a medium for puppetry. It will take place at the India Habitat Centre on Lodhi Road till February 9.

Giving an artistic start to 2019, the India Art Fair in New Delhi is the perfect place to get an insider's perspective on the South-Asian art scene. Here are a few mediums that are the topical favorites of artists this year.

While it may seem basic, paper cut-outs seem to be all the rage. Where one artist framed their delicate cut-outs as is, another mixed them with carpets as an off-beat wall hanging.

The annual International Surajkund Crafts Mela is all set to take place from February 1 to February 17. This year, the mela will host over 1000 artisans from across the world. The corridor connects Noida with Greater Noida and is open to the public starting 26 January that is Repuplic Day.
