Teenage anxiety, depression linked to heart attacks in middle age

Aug 27, 2020 17:22 IST

Raising an alarm for parents of young kids all over the world, new research warns that depression or anxiety in adolescence is connected to a 20% greater likelihood of having a heart attack mid-life. The study included 238,000 men born between 1952 and 1956, more than 34,000 of which were diagnosed with a non-psychotic mental disorder. The study found that a mental disorder in adolescence can often be accompanied by poorer stress resilience and lower physical activeness, which may partly explain the link with heart problems later in life. Publishing their findings in the European Society of Cardiology, an author from the study said this information is relevant for all youngsters, but 'those with poorer wellbeing could benefit from additional support to encourage exercise and to develop strategies to deal with stress.'
