The Allahabad High Court, on Thursday, rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Aparna Purohit, the India Head of Amazon Prime Video, in a case registered against her in connection with the web series 'Tandav' on the streaming platform.
The Court while rejecting the plea, noted that "the sentiments of the majority community have been hurt by the display of the characters of their faith in a disrespectful manner and on the other hand, an attempt has been made to widen the gap between the higher castes and the scheduled castes".
The court went on to say, that through the web-series, people made revered religious figures of the majority community a source of earning money, in the most brazen manner taking advantage of the liberal and tolerant tradition of the country.
The Allahabad High Court drew parallels between Bollywood and Hollywood saying, western filmmakers have refrained from ridiculing Jesus or the Prophet, but Hindi filmmakers have done it repeatedly.
Amazon executive Aparna Purohit has been booked for promoting enmity between different groups, defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion among other charges.
