Sunil Chhetri goes past Messi's tally with winning brace vs Bangladesh

Jun 08, 2021 09:30 IST | By Editorji News Desk

Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri added yet another feather to an already illustrious cap, as he went past Lionel Messi's tally of international goals. Chhetri's brace against Bangladesh in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup joint qualifiers on Monday, helped India beat the neighbours 2-0.

His twin strike took his international goal tally to 74 from 117 matches, which is the second most in the world now among active footballers. The tally is headed by Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo with 103 goals from 174 games.

The result in Doha on Monday also helped India end its 11-match winless streak and boost their chances of earning a direct spot in the third round of the Asian Cup qualifiers.
