Sudan: military govt, opposition reach power-sharing agreement

Aug 03, 2019 15:43 IST

After months of negotiations and violent protests, the Sudanese military and the opposition have come to a power-sharing agreement. The two sides agreed on a constitutional declaration outlining the division of power before transitioning to elections in 3 years. The African nation was plunged into chaos after the military overthrew President Omar al-Bashir in April following months of mass protests against his authoritarian rule. Following the coup, protesters continued to demand a civilian transition government and democratic elections.
