Struggling economy: here's why Pakistan wants to import cotton & sugar from India

After a 19-month gap, Pakistan will restart trade relations with India with a mix of soft and sweet items.

Pakistan's economic coordination committee approved importing cotton yarn until June, it will also purchase 500,000 tons of sugar

Diplomatic relations between the two nations were suspended August 2019 after the Narendra Modi govt revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. 

In on Feb 28, this year, the nuclear-armed neighbours surprised the world with a joint commitment to respect a 2003 cease-fire agreement Line of Control. 

So why cotton and sugar?

Pakistan is looking to reduce surging inflation in the nation by importing sugar as prices are 15-20%  lower in India.

For cotton as well local production of cotton is the lowest in 30 years across Pakistan.
