Stock markets on Friday closed with strong gains as stocks witnessed value buying and some short covering. Asian peers also contributed to the rally. The Sensex surged over 1,600 points and Nifty ended the trade at 8,749, up 5.88%. With this, benchmark indices posted the best one-day gain since 2009 and the worst weekly drop since 2008. Infratel, ONGC, GAIL, Hindustan Unilever and UltraTech Cement were the top Nifty gainers. HDFC Bank, Adani Ports, IndusInd Bank and Axis Bank were the only losers today. At 3:45 pm, the Indian rupee was 6 paise down at 75.05 against the US dollar.
