Police officers, ambulance drivers and street cleaners stood in the pouring rain in Madrid as people in Spain fell silent to pay their respects on Tuesday to those who have died of Covid-19. Similarly, Italy observed a minute of silence and flew flags at half-mast on Tuesday in honour of those who have died of the new coronavirus. Overnight, Spain recorded 849 virus deaths, the highest daily toll since the pandemic hit the southern European country. In Italy, over 11,000 people have died in the past few months from coronavirus and 100,000 have been infected.
