Scientists drill on remote glacier for the first time

Jan 29, 2020 16:09 IST

For the first time ever, scientists have successfully drilled on Antarctica's remote glacier, Thwaites, which is almost the size of Florida and more susceptible to climate change. As part of the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration's project, scientists created an underwater robot called Icefin to help gather data about the glacier and understand how warmer water is impacting the Thwaites. Scientists drilled through 2,300 feet of ice and Icefin swam more than a mile to the Thwaites' grounding zone to capture images.
