Scientists discover a huge cavity under 'the world's most dangerous glacier'

Jan 31, 2019 18:00 IST

Researchers from the University of California and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laborator (JPL), have detected a huge cavity under the Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica, which is often dubbed as 'the world's most dangerous glacier'. The cavity covers approximately two-thirds of the footprint of Manhattan and is almost 948 feet tall! It is so large that it represents a chunk of the 252 billion tonnes of ice lost from Antartica every year. The melting of the glacier could lift the ocean levels by about 2 feet, with unthinkable consequences globally.
