SC junks Rizvi’s plea seeking removal of 26 Quran verses

Apr 12, 2021 15:30 IST | By Editorji News Desk

Amid an outcry by various Muslim groups, the Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a PIL which sought deletion of 26 verses from the Quran.

The petitioner Syed Waseem Rizvi, who is a former chairperson of Shia Central Board of Waqf in Uttar Pradesh, had alleged that the verses violate the law of the land and promote extremism.

Bar and Bench reported that the SC also imposed costs of Rs. 50,000 on Rizvi.

Rizvi, in his PIL, had alleged that the 26 verses “promote violence”, and were not part of the original Quran, but were added in later revisions.
