SC declines PIL seeking ban on inflammatory hashtags on Twitter

Apr 30, 2020 15:50 IST

The Supreme Court on Thursday declined to entertain a petition seeking direction to stop trending of various hashtags on Twitter which attach religion to the Covid-19 pandemic. Advocate Khaja Aijazuddin had moved court seeking directions to Twitter to stop #Islamiccoronavirusjihad, #Coronajihad, #Tablighi jamat, #Nizamuddinidiots, #TablighiJamatVirus. The petitioner argued that these messages were attaching the religion to pandemic disease, and this was unwarranted, illegal and unconstitutional. A bench headed by Chief Justice Bobde said it was akin to asking MTNL to stop people talking wrong things on phone.
