Russia said that the United States is playing with fire after the US announced sanctions on seven senior Russian officials over the attempted assassination of opposition leader Alexei Navalny using a nerve agent, and his subsequent jailing. The sanctions are the first announced by the Joe Biden administration against associates of Russian President Vladimir Putin
Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Russia will continue to systematically and resolutely defend its national interests and rebuff aggression.
She accused the United States of trying to cultivate the image of an external enemy as a way to distract attention from domestic problems.
