Row after ICHR erases Nehru from poster celebrating India's Independence

Aug 29, 2021 13:46 IST | By Editorji News Desk

The exclusion of Pandit Nehru's image from the poster of the 'Azaadi ka Amrit Mahotsav' celebrations by the ICHR has triggered a controversy. Oppositon leaders have slammed the government terming the move "petty and atrocious".

A digital poster released by the Indian Council for Historical Research to celebrate India's independence shows Gandhi, Patel and Savarkar among others, while the first Prime Minister of Independent India is conspicuously missing.

The ICHR, however, said that the reaction to the poster was “premature” and the upcoming posters will feature Nehru.

Congress leader P Chidambaram on Sunday hit out at the ICHR for omitting the photograph of Jawaharlal Nehru and said the explanation given is ludicrous.

He accused the member secretary of the ICHR of bowing to hate and prejudice and asked him whether he would omit Henry Ford while celebrating the birth of the motor car or Wright brothers while celebrating the birth of aviation.
