'Rope in elected leaders to ensure Covid appropriate behaviour', Centre directs

Mar 31, 2021 08:01 IST | By Editorji News Desk

In the wake of an alarming spike in coronavirus cases in the recent weeks, the centre on Tuesday wrote to states and union territories saying ‘elected representatives and religious leaders should be roped in to ensure Covid-appropriate behaviour’.

The directive is a part of a multi-point "action plan" to contain the virus before it "overwhelms healthcare systems". ‘Covid-appropriate behaviour must be enforced using Police Act’ Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan wrote in the letter.

The directive comes at a time when political leaders are busy campaigning ahead of the assembly elections in 5 states with their rallies being attended by scores of people seen flouting protocols.
