High volatility in stock markets; benchmarks end 0.7% up

The benchmark indices on Wednesday ended in green after a highly volatile day as investors hope for a stimulus package soon. The Sensex ended 232 points higher at 31,685 and the Nifty closed the session gaining 0.71% at 9,270. Bajaj Finance, M&M, GAIL, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank were the top five Nifty movers. Whereas, Infratel, ITC, Coal India, IOC and HUL were pulling the markets down. The rupee depreciated 9 paise to close at 75.72 against the US dollar.
