Riskiest time for surgery patients isn't on the operation table

Jul 31, 2019 16:31 IST

The riskiest time for many surgery patients isn’t when they’re on the operating table, it’s while they’re recovering in the hospital and after they go home during the healing period, a new study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal suggests. Researchers examined outcomes for over 40,000 patients who underwent non-cardiac surgeries at 28 hospitals in 14 countries. Overall, less than 1% of the patients died on the operating table, and over 70% died in the hospital or after they were sent home. Nearly half of all the deaths were associated with three complications: major bleeding, heart damage, and bloodstream infections.
