Researchers from the University of Cape Town in South Africa, have identified a molecule, effective in killing the tuberculosis bacteria. Called 8918, the molecule prevents the growth of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mtb, which causes the disease. The research was conducted on Mtb mouse models and when the molecule was administered, it killed some of the bacteria without harming the mice. The research provides new hope for potential drugs that could cure TB. The study was published in the journal Science.
