Research links Vitamin D to Covid-19 mortality rates

May 12, 2020 17:30 IST

A study, led by scientists from Anglia Ruskin University in the UK and Queen Elizabeth Hospital's NHS Foundation Trust, has shown that there is a link between levels of Vitamin D and cases of Covid-19 and its mortality rate. The research examined data from 20 countries in Europe and found that low levels of vitamin D was associated with a high number of cases. Vitamin D adjusts how white blood cells respond, preventing them from releasing excess of inflammatory cytokines, a part of the body’s immune response to tackle infections, the study said. The study found that Italy and Spain, where the mortality rate was very high, have a lower average level of Vitamin D.
