Report: Huawei overtakes Samsung as world's top smartphone seller

Chinese smartphone maker Huawei beat Samsung to become the biggest smartphone player in the world in the second quarter for the first time, according to data from research firm Canalys. Huawei shipped 55.8 million devices as compared to Samsung’s 53.7 million. And while its sales fell 5 per cent year-on-year, the South Korean tech giant suffered a major 30 per cent drop due to the pandemic. The Chinese company saw its overseas shipments fall 27 per cent in Q2 from last year due to US sanctions, but it has increased its dominance in the home market where it now sells over 70 per cent of its phones.
