Back in the day, people in Mexico City used reusable cloths, mesh bags and woven straw baskets for grocery shopping and these old ways will be making a comeback. A new law, banning single-use plastic bags came into effect on the 1st of January. While some are ready for the ban, others wonder how it'll work in practice. Under the law, grocery stores will be fined if they give out plastic bags. Some reluctant residents fear how they would be able to shop if they forgot to carry their own bags as buying one would carry a high price. By 2021, the same law will ban handing out plastic straws, spoons, coffee capsules and other single-use items.
