Reef sharks are declining worldwide, suggests new study

Jul 24, 2020 13:56 IST

In a study of 371 reefs across 58 countries, scientists have found that almost 20% of them are devoid of sharks! Reef sharks are declining worldwide and this could have dire consequences for the entire reef system, suggests the largest study on the subject, published in the journal Nature. For the study, underwater cameras were fitted and baits were attached to a pole at the front of the cameras to attract nearby sharks. By regulating fishing standards, there is hope to save the species as over-fishing is one of the biggest causes responsible for the decline in their population.
