Questions on efficacy: Europe-AstraZeneca Covid vaccine row worsens

Jan 29, 2021 23:27 IST

Germany cast doubt on the effectiveness of AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 shot for the elderly in a move that could perpetuate the European Union’s vaccine supply shortages. Europe's row with AstraZeneca worsened after Germany declined to recommend the firm's coronavirus vaccine for older people. 'There are currently insufficient data available to assess the vaccine efficacy', the committee, also known as Stiko, said in a draft resolution made available by the German health ministry on Thursday. "The AstraZeneca vaccine, unlike the mRNA vaccines, should only be offered to people aged 18-64 years at each stage," it added.
