Punjab farm fires up 90% over daily avg of 5 yrs: study

Nov 20, 2020 07:58 IST

Even as the governments are struggling to keep a check on farm fires in Punjab, a study has revealed that the number stubble fires increased by 90% this year compared to the average daily fire counts over the past five years. The grim figure is based on an analysis of satellite data done by a team of scientists at IIT-Delhi. The Hindustan Times, quoting the study, has reported that the number of fire counts almost doubled this year in most districts of Punjab. The smoke and pollutants from farm fires are one of the major contributors to PM 2.5 levels in Delhi's air which has worsened in October-November.
