Along with Covid-19, Kerala's health infrastructure is battling a sudden jump in alcohol related suicide cases. 5 people with alleged alcohol addiction have committed suicide in the state. With prohibition in place due to the national lockdown, there is a sudden jump in admissions in de-addiction centres and mental health units. Several people have withdrawal symptoms due to the unavailability of liquor. State Health Minister said that facilities for addiction treatments have been set up at family health centres and primary health centres. 20 beds have been set aside at district level hospitals for serious addiction cases. Tele-counselling and psychiatric help is also being provided.
