Prize money war: athletes wrestle with Khattar govt

Jun 26, 2019 16:17 IST

2018 Asian Games and Commonwealth Games gold medalists Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat are up in arms against the Haryana government over the new sports policy which calls for deduction in the prize money if an athlete wins more than one medal. Both the ace wrestlers accused the Haryana government of demoralizing the state’s sportspersons and trying to destroy the sports culture. The duo was joined by Olympic medalist Yogeshwar Dutt in condemnation of the Khattar government that has decided to pay full prize money highest medals but 50 per cent on subsequent medals. Whil Vinesh Phogat has offered to return her prize money, the state government has said it has no intention of disrespecting athletes.
