A vaccine trial for the novel coronavirus has begun in South Africa, the first such study to take place in the region. About 2,000 volunteers will take part in the international study and receive a jab. The vaccine has been created by the Oxford Jenner Institute in the UK and trials are also being conducted in Brazil and Britain. South Africa has over one lakh Covid-19 cases, carrying nearly one-third of Africa's confirmed cases, according to data from the Johns Hopkins University. Experts at Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warn of a steep increase in infections.
