Police use facial recognition system to screen PM Modi’s rally

Dec 31, 2019 15:31 IST

According to an Indian Express report, the Delhi Police used facial recognition technology to screen crowds at Prime Minister Modi’s Ramlila Maidan rally on December 22, using footage filmed at various protest events. It was the first time that the Automated Facial Recognition System (AFRS) software was used in a political rally, raising concerns about privacy and mass surveillance amidst cross country protests against a new citizenship law. The government plans to roll out a nationwide system, possibly the world’s biggest, claiming that it will stop criminals and find missing children.
