A Reuters report says, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is considering three options for a relief package of as much as ₹3 lakh crore, to help suffering farmers. These include a direct payment to all landowning farmers, compensation for those who sold produce below government prices, and a loan-waiver programme. With the BJP looking to win over 263 million farmers before the 2019 polls, the government's move could come at a major cost to the nation's budget, which is already under stress due to lower tax revenue and fiscal deficit.
