Only one in every five eateries has a food safety licence in India, according to the NRAI India Food Services Report 2019. This means that only 4.67 lakh of the 24.9 lakh food business operators have a licenced by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. FSSAI directed the FDA across different states to grant food licenses within two months to eateries if they comply with all rules. According to an Economic Times report, nearly half of the licenced eateries are in two states- Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.
