Covid fears restricts big participation at the Tokyo Olympics Opening Ceremony

Indian Olympic Association Secretary Rajiv Mehta has confirmed that only 28 Indian athletes will participate at the Tokyo Olympics Opening Ceremony. The Indian contingent will be represented by 6 officials and 28 athletes as the idea was to restrict the number of participants to 50 due to Covid-19 fears. 

The decision was taken after a meeting between chef de mission and coaches on Thursday morning in Tokyo. The Indian contingent has over 125 athletes and a total of 228 members including support staff and officials.

Most shooters, hockey team members will be skipping the ceremony as they have their events lined up the following day on Saturday. Hockey captain Manpreet Singh and six-time world champion woman boxer MC Mary Kom will remain the flag-bearers for the opening ceremony.
