Omega 3 Fatty Acids: Good fat? Bad fat? Find out

Omega 3 fatty acids are essential fats that are not produced like other nutrients inside the human body. Omega 3 fatty acids are generally derived from food or supplements.

Omega 3 fatty acids are essential fats that are not produced by the human body like other nutrients. They are generally derived from food or supplements which help the lungs, heart, blood vessels and immune system to function optimally.

Certain fish contain two crucial fatty acids like EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid). Getting more EPA in the diet has positive effects on coronary heart disease, high triglycerides, high blood pressure and inflammation. On the other hand, DHA plays a key role in the development of eye and nerve tissues. The third kind is called ALA (Alpha-Linolenic acid) and they are generally found in plant products like nuts and seeds.

Omega-3 fatty acids have several benefits so let's take a look at them in detail.

Improves Vision

An omega-3 fatty acid called DHA is a major structural component of the eye's retinas. As per National Centre for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), these fats help to prevent macular degeneration, which can cause vision impairment and blindness. It is also essential for visual and neurological development among infants.

Lowers depression

According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, people who consume omega-3s regularly are less likely to be depressed. When people with depression or anxiety start taking omega-3 supplements, their symptoms are thought to improve.

Reduces risk of heart disease

Fish-eating communities have very low rates of heart-related diseases and researchers at NCBI reasoned it to a higher intake of omega-3 through fish. Fish oil can lower triglyceride levels, which is a type of fat in the blood. This reduces the chance of stroke or other heart issues.
