Not against free speech: Kerala CM clarifies on new law

Nov 22, 2020 20:11 IST

Clarifying on the amendment in the Kerala Police Act, the Chief Minister's Office said that this law in no way will be used against free speech or impartial journalism. Chief Minister Vijayan said that while the state had a duty to protect individuals liberty and dignity, no action will be taken against the media for criticising the government. Earlier, Governor Arif Mohammed Khan signed on the ordinance which gave Kerala Police to punish those who post derogatory or defamatory content on social media, the punishment of which is up to three years jail, or fine of ₹ 10,000 or both. Opposition leaders like Congress's P Chidambaram and Shashi Tharoor were quick to act calling the law 'shocking' and 'troubling'.
