North Korea stares at worst famine since 1990s

Oct 16, 2020 17:22 IST

A series of devastating typhoons, storms, international sanctions and the closure of border due to the Covid-19 have wreaked havoc on North Korea's food provisions and have now raised concerns of the worst North Korea famine since 1990. The country of 26 million people has battled three storms in a span of just two weeks in August and September just before their main annual harvest. Moreover, the closure of the border has also affected the nation that is dependent on China for the food imports and agricultural inputs like fuel and fertilisers, further hurting their harvest. Earlier on Monday, Kim Jong Un, broke into tears on the 75th anniversary of the ruling Workers' party while accepting he had failed to live up to his people’s expectations.
