North Korea showcases rail-borne missile test, South Korea tests ballistic missiles

North and South Korea have tested ballistic missiles hours apart from each other

North Korean state media published images early Thursday of the country's latest rail-borne missile test, describing it as part of a "new national defence strategy". The North fired two ballistic missiles across its east coast, its first test with such missiles in six months and a fresh breach of UN resolutions.

The official account of the missile launch did not mention Kim Jong Un being present. Three of the four small images clearly show train tracks and train carriages.

Hours later, South Korea tested its first submarine-launched ballistic missile. The test of the missile known as SLBM was pre-planned and not in reaction to the North's latest launches. It makes South Korea the seventh country in the world with such technology.
