North east's first trans doctor raises hopes for many

At 27, Beoncy Laishram from Manipur is North East India's first transgender doctor and proudly wears the tag of a Covid-19 warrior. Laishram, who has become a symbol of hope for the trans community in the region wears many feathers on her cap. Besides slogging hard to become a doctor, she also participated in the high-profile beauty pageant Miss Trans Queen Northeast in 2013. It was in this year that she changed her name from Boboi to Beoncy. Life hasn't been easy for the 27-year-old, who faced family hardships when she came out in 2016. She now helps others like her to get access to good healthcare facilities in Imphal, where she works in a private hospital.
