In a horrifying incident from Kerala's Malappuram, a class 9 student allegedly committed suicide by setting herself on fire as she was unable to access online classes. The police on Tuesday&nbsp;said that the girl's family did not have a smartphone and the school's&nbsp;channel was not working on her home television. The 14-year old girl, daughter of a daily wage earner who did not have work due to the lockdown, was depressed and finally killed herself, her family said. The incident comes just a day after CM Pinnarayi Vijayan announced the start of the academic year via online classes, so as to not disrupt the lives of students.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray urged people living in coastal areas to remain indoors for two days, starting tomorrow when cyclonic storm Nisarga is expected to make landfall near Alibaug. Thackeray also advised people in the coastal regions of Maharashtra to store drinking water and keep life-saving medicines handy as the cyclone approaches. He added that people should tune in to instructions on Doordarshan and All India Radio and cooperate with the district administration. He told people to keep their phones charged and not use unnecessary gadgets, warning that officials may have to cut electricity at a few places where heavy rainfall is likely.

The Union Health Ministry in its daily briefing on the Covid-19 situation on Tuesday said, 3,708 patients, have been cured in the last 24 hours, while a total of 95,527 patients have recovered so far, taking India's recovery rate to 48.07%. The Health Ministry also said, that 73% of Covid-19 deaths in the country are of people with comorbidities, adding that one in every two deaths in India has been of senior citizens who constitute 10% of our total population. The good news is that India's fatality rate is 2.82%, among the lowest in the world. 14 countries with a cumulative population almost equal to that of India have reported 55.2 times more Covid-19 deaths. India has also ramped up testing. The govt said 1.2 lakh samples are being tested for Covid-19 every day. India has 681 laboratories that are approved for conducting tests, of which 476 are in the govt sector and 205 are in the private sector.

At least 20 people have died in a series of landslides in Assam on Tuesday. Three districts of the Barak valley region in southern Assam has seen a number of landslides after heavy rain over the last couple of days. Many have been reported injured. Rescue teams have been rushed to the sites. Among those dead are seven people in Cachar district, seven in Hailakandi district and six in Karimganj district, reports said.

A pregnant elephant, who had wandered into a village in Kerala in search of food, died after some locals fed her a pineapple stuffed with firecrackers. The incident was brought to light by forest officer Mohan&nbsp;Krishnan on Facebook. He wrote in his post that the pineapple exploded in the elephant's mouth injuring her badly. She then ran around the village in pain but didn't hurt anyone or damage anything. She finally went and stood in the river which possibly gave her relief from the pain. The forest officials tried to rescue her by using two other elephants but she refused to come out and died while standing in water. The elephant's body was taken back to the forest and cremated.&nbsp;

198 migrant workers lost their lives in road accidents during the lockdown period, according to data compiled by the SaveLIFE Foundation, a road safety NGO, from various media reports over the last few months. There were at least 1,461 accidents over the course of the nationwide lockdown - from March 25 to May 31 - in which at least 750 people were killed, including 198 migrant workers. Migrant workers, killed on their way home, comprise 26.4% of the overall deaths during the lockdown, while essential workers like medics comprise 5.3% of the total deaths. Uttar Pradesh accounted for over 30% (245) of the total deaths followed by Telangana (56), Madhya Pradesh (56), Bihar (43), Punjab (38) and Maharashtra (36).

Delhi Lt Governor Anil Baijal has approved the premature release of Jessica Lal murder convict Manu Sharma, who is serving a life sentence. The move comes after the Delhi Sentence Review Board, which comes under the Delhi government had recommended his premature release last month. Manu Sharma, son of former Union minister Venod Sharma, was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by the Delhi High Court in December 2006 for killing Jessica Lal in 1999. A trial court had acquitted him, but the high court reversed the order and the Supreme Court later upheld his life sentence in April 2010.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday launched a mobile app to help people know how many beds are lying vacant in which hospital in the national capital. He said there is an information gap because people tell the government that they could not find any bed in hospitals. &ldquo;This app will fill that gap,&rdquo; Kejriwal said. A pigeon with a pink patch and tag on its leg that had some number on it, flew to Jammu and Kashmir&rsquo;s Kathua from Pakistan and triggered conspiracies. Habibullah, a Pakistani man and alleged owner of the bird made pleas from across the border for the bird&rsquo;s release. He said the numbers on the bird&rsquo;s tag was not a code but his phone number and urged the authorities to return the &lsquo;innocent bird&rsquo;. After investigating the infiltration, Indian authorities found the bird to be just that, a bird, and released it from the same spot where it was found.
