A religious organisation for Sunni Muslims reportedly challenged the newly enacted law that makes the practice of instant triple talaq a punishable offence. The Kerala-based Muslim body urged the Supreme Court to declare the law unconstitutional. Petitioners say the law can cause grave public mischief, which, if unchecked, may lead to polarization and disharmony in society. A separate petition challenging the new law was also filed in the Delhi High Court. The petitioner, a Delhi-based lawyer said criminalisation of 'triple talaq' could be misused as the Act does not provide for a mechanism to ascertain the truthfulness of allegations made.
