Nearly half a billion animals have died in Australian wildfires

Jan 03, 2020 16:35 IST

Ecologists at the University of Sydney have estimated that at least 480 million mammals, birds and reptiles have died in bush fires that have swept the nation since September. As the wildfires continue to rage and several states suffer record-breaking heatwaves, heartbreaking images of burnt koalas, fleeing kangaroos and dead birds have become a common sight on social media. The estimated death toll includes about 8,000 koalas, and up to 30 percent of the species in New South Wales may have been wiped out, shared the federal environment minister Sussan Ley in an ABC Radio interview.
