Thai soldiers began sending back some of the thousands of people who have fled a series of airstrikes by the military junta in neighboring Myanmar. Myanmar aircraft reportedly carried out three strikes overnight Sunday. The weekend strikes, which sent ethnic Karen people seeking safety in Thailand, represented another escalation in the violent crackdown by Myanmar’s junta on protesters demanding release of elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and return of democracy. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called the surge in killings by the military on Armed Forces Day ‘absolutely horrendous’ . Britain called for a closed meeting of the UN Security Council which will be held Wednesday afternoon.
